How do we accommodate the changing nature of industrial and logistics development?

The old definition of industrial property has changed. Where once we had factories and warehouses, technology and changes in consumer habits are driving demand for large scale data and distribution centres. With over 5.47 million UK private sector small and medium businesses operating in the UK, we cannot afford to ignore their needs. This session explores the conflicting demands of manufacturing, both large and small, logistics and the wider property market and how the public and private sectors need to work together try and satisfy the demands. Exploring:

  • Understanding the need for a new definition of industrial and logistics that recognises the diverse occupier market, new societal trends such as online retail and do we need to worry about the disappearance of so much industrial land?
  • The potential for more creative mixed use - is it possible for maker space, large logistics facilities and residential to co-exist?
  • The role of planning authorities/combined authorities in deciding between these different uses – how can we support a smooth path on this and should there be mandates on land use?
  • How do we best facilitate creative land use and the intensification of site use?
  • The impact of the new style logistics and industrial development on societies and communities – how do we garner their support?
